Polo legend’s trophy collection now half price at Paul Fraser Collectibles

• The trophies were won by star player Eric Horace Tyrrell-Martin, who captained the England team in the 1936 Westchester Cup
• The 28 trophies – mostly silver – include the Oxford-Cambridge Varsity trophy from 1926
• Formerly priced at £29,950 – the collection is now available at £14,950 for a quick sale

Paul Fraser Collectibles, the Bristol, UK memorabilia dealer, is now offering the trophy collection of polo legend Eric Horace Tyrrell-Martin (1905-1953) for half price.

Tyrrell-Martin, a nine-handicap player, was one of the game’s first superstars and among the greatest players of the golden era of polo. Tyrrell-Martin captained the England team in the Westchester Cup at Hurlingham in 1936.

The glittering 28-piece silverware collection includes the trophy from Cambridge’s 1926 varsity win over Oxford, in which Tyrrell-Martin played for the triumphant light blues. Other trophies include the 1937 Midwick Country Club Open Championship, a 1939 Meadow Brook Club trophy and a trophy from Deauville in 1930.

With his wife, Edith “Babs”, Tyrrell-Martin enjoyed a glittering social life in the UK, US and internationally. It’s why two address books that complement the trophies include the names of celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Bing Crosby, Clarke Gable and Walt Disney.

The collection is rounded out by 300 photos of polo events and several newspaper cuttings, mostly detailing the Westchester Cup at Hurlingham.

The client who owns the collection has instructed Paul Fraser Collectibles to reduce the price from £29,950 to £14,950 to achieve a quick sale.

About Eric Horace Tyrrell-Martin

Eric Horace Tyrrell-Martin (1905-1953) was an English international polo player who captained the English team in 1936. Born in Yorkshire, he attended Rugby and Cambridge before becoming a Lieutenant in the 16th Hussars. He married Edith 'Babs' in 1929, who was an exceptional sportswoman, playing tennis at Wimbledon and placing as a runner up in the All American Women's Golf Championship. Tyrrell-Martin had a colourful polo career: he captained the English polo team against America for the Westchester Cup at Hurlingham, and was invited to represent England at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936, but wasn't able to accept. He and Edith moved to California in 1936 and he spent much time travelling the world playing polo. He and Babs led a glittering social life with many famous friends and connections. They visited the Roosevelts at the White House in 1939, and with the backing of King Farouk, Tyrrell-Martin promoted and developed polo in Egypt. Tyrrell-Martin died in 1953 as a result of injuries sustained while playing polo.
